GRAD STUDENTS RECOGNIZED

In order to recognize graduate students in the state -- and specifically those at the UW -- Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels and Gov. Christine Gregoire officially declared this week Graduate and Professional Education (GPE) Week.
Today through Thursday, the community is invited to focus on UW graduate students' accomplishments and futures with a series of public forums, networking socials and guest speakers.
"This is something we wanted to bring city and state attention to," said Nick Peyton, vice president of the Graduate and Professional Student Senate (GPSS).
Each day this week has a theme -- today is Diversity Day; tomorrow Teaching and Research Day, and Thursday will be Community and Career Connections Day.
A lecture tomorrow by Catharine Stimpson will focus on the issue of graduate students finding jobs in a global society.
"We're going delve into issues that a lot of grad students are going to face in the future, including the global impacts of graduate education and competitiveness in the global market," said Robin Knight, the director of development of the UW Graduate School.
Though the events are catered to graduate students, issues like diversity effect undergraduate and graduate students alike, said Katherine Van Maren, secretary of the Graduate and Professional Student Senate (GPSS).
"I think, depending on which day students are interested in, they can really get a lot out of what GPE is all about," she said.
