GRADUATE STUDENTS DEMAND MORE COVERAGE IN THE DAILY
Source: The Daily
Author: The GPSS Officers
Date: Oct 06, 2006
Last Wednesday The Daily made a big point of asking students to submit news and story ideas. Unless The Daily plans to make big changes this year, this appears to be false advertising.
The Graduate and Professional Student Senate (GPSS) has been asking for coverage of its events and activities for years to no avail.
For example, last spring, despite an invitation, The Daily failed to show up at the GPSS meeting where new GPSS officers were elected, and then failed to even mention the results in the paper the next day. In the “Who's Who on Campus” article that came out last Monday, The Daily forgot to mention the student government group that represents a third of this campus. The group that lobbies in Olympia for lower tuition, childcare for students and lower text book costs; the group that provides grants to graduate departments and student organizations; the group that organizes two huge socials every year; the group that participates in Board of Regents meetings every month; the group that published orientation booklets for all departments; the group that places graduate students on important University committees. This group is GPSS and this group never gets ink in The Daily.
Given that The Daily's own survey revealed that graduate students make up 27% of its readership and one respondent was quoted as saying, “graduate and professional students are entirely ignored, even though we are often involved in some of the biggest policy decisions,” it is time for The Daily to live up to its own expectations and establish a regular graduate and professional beat.
