UW PRESIDENT RANKS 3RD IN TOTAL PAY

A $100,000 raise University of Washington President Mark Emmert received this fall made him the third-highest-paid president of a public university, according to The Chronicle of Higher Education.
With the raise, Emmert makes $752,700 annually, including deferred compensation, retirement pay and use of a car. (When only salary and deferred compensation are included, Emmert makes $718,700.) According to the Chronicle, only David Roselle of the University of Delaware ($979,571) and Martin Jischke of Purdue University ($880,950) make more.
Last year, Emmert ranked No. 8 on the Chronicle's annual survey, which includes salaries, bonuses, cars, houses and other benefits in its tally. The UW Board of Regents gave Emmert a raise this fall in part because it was concerned he could be recruited by other institutions.
College-president salaries have increased dramatically in recent years. The Chronicle of Higher Education said the number of presidents earning more than $500,000 increased by 53 percent since last year.
