PUB IN THE HUB RESOLUTION UP FOR DISCUSSION AGAIN

Those who are 21 or older may soon have the opportunity to meet with friends and colleagues at a new campus hotspot: a pub in the HUB.
Late last month, the Graduate and Professional Student Senate (GPSS) approved a resolution asking for an amendment to the Washington Administrative Code that bans alcohol consumption on campus, in order to allow for a pub in the UW’s student union building. The resolution also requests that the idea be made part of the HUB Master Plan, a large renovation project on the building.
Sponsors Andrew Everett, a member of the ASUW Student Senate, and Melissa Aar, GPSS office manager, said the HUB is a well-known, central location for the UW community to gather, where a pub would be successful.
“The pub would provide a fun place to hang out and a great place to hold meetings on campus,” Aar said.
A pub on campus would most likely be safer than a bar on the Ave because it would be a controlled, student-run operation, Aar added.
At the most recent GPSS meeting, those opposed to the pub idea voiced their concerns about safety, high noise levels and the worry that allowing alcohol consumption on campus would not reflect a good image of the University.
“I feel it would attract unwelcome characters and crime, as well as create an unacademic and unprofessional atmosphere in the HUB and on campus,” sophomore Doug McManaway said in an e-mail.
Aar pointed out that several universities have pubs on their campuses: Stanford, OSU and Princeton, to name a few. Some graduate students attending these schools have said that the pubs are great places to meet people and network.
This isn’t the first time students have requested a pub in the HUB. Last October, the idea was tabled indefinitely in the student senate.
This resolution, however, comes at a good time, since the Master Plan to redesign the HUB is still in the beginning planning stages. An estimated $296,000 will be spent on the redesign in accordance with changing needs and lifestyles of HUB patrons, according to the Capital Projects Office.
GPSS representatives will meet with the HUB Master Plan architects to discuss possible designs for a pub. In the upcoming weeks, students, faculty and staff will be welcome to attend focus groups to voice their opinions for or against an on-campus pub.
